During the January 2018 holidays we're collaborating with ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) at their unique Discovery Centre to provide a range of exciting, engaging and hands-on school holiday programs! 
 

This unique site offers the opportunity for your kids to find out more about the groundbreaking research being conducted by ANSTO scientists every day to better our lives.
 
  • Half and full day holiday program workshops & activities appropriate for all Sydney school aged children!
  • Please bring food, a drink, a hat and appropriate clothing for science activities.

What to bring to our holiday programs

 
  • lunch and morning tea  (supervision during lunchtime is not available unfortunately)
  • hat
  • water bottle
  • any medications

NB: No peanuts allowed on-site

 
These holiday programs often sell out early; get in early to ensure that you don't miss out!  A Parent or Guardian is required to sign the child in upon arrival and then sign them out when picking them up after the workshop. Refunds available if the event is cancelled or rescheduled.
 

How to get to ANSTO (Lucas Heights, NSW)

ANSTO Discovery Centre location


Northern Approach
  1. Take the M5 to the Fairford Rd exit which is marked with signs to Menai and Wollongong
  2. (please note that a toll is payable).
  3. Head south for approximately 14kms staying on Fairford
  4. Rd as it turns into Davies Rd,
  5. Alford’s Point Rd and New Illawarra Rd (all of these will be designated as Route 6). 
Southern Approach
  1. Take the Princes Highway to Engadine then turn into Heathcote Rd which is marked with signs to Menai and Liverpool.
  2. Head west for 5.4 kms and turn right onto New Illawarra Rd for 1.8 kms.
  3. ANSTO will be on your right
Once within the ANSTO complex
  1. Turn off New Illawarra Rd onto Rutherford Ave and proceed approximately 150 metres to a roundabout at the top of the small hill.
  2. If you are arriving by car, turn left (marked with signs to Motel Café) and then into one of the car parks immediately on your left or right.
  3. Walk to the Discovery Centre which is directly opposite the Café next to Gate 19, using the footpaths and pedestrian crossings provided.

Maker Mayhem

Using a range of materials, including Lego Technics, students will learn all about how things move and investigate mechanical systems like gears and pulleys. We'll then explore how science and engineering can be used to make art as we build Scribblebots to take home, playing with different designs to create awesome patterns.

Natural Disasters

In a hands-on workshop, students investigate earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, firestorms, landslides, meteorites and other natural disasters.

  • Wear old clothes
  • Please bring a snack, a drink and a hat with you on the day.

Extreme Engineering

Get your build on!

The kids will have a blast in this school holiday workshop where they put their imagination to the test constructing all sorts of contraptions. We’ll investigate the design and structures of towers and bridges to understand what gives them the strength to hold up, we’ll create complex machines using common materials and undertake a challenge in making a spacecraft survive a landing!

Age: 8–14 years

GeoScience

Geology rocks! Enter the geology lab as we look at rock formation, minerals and more in a fun hands-on holiday workshop. Grow your own crystals, find out how volcanoes erupt, learn about earthquakes, discover why plants favour particular soils and participate in the techniques used by geologists to study and classify the Earth.
