1st hand superconductor demonstration as required in the current NSW Stage 6 Physics Syllabus
Superconductors & Lenz's Law
This performance is authorised by the
Performances for Schools program, managed by the NSW Department of Education & Training.
Demonstrations

Jumping Rings Application of Lenz's law to Thomson ring experiment at cryogenic temperatures
Can a current exist in an incomplete ring of metal?
Do different semi-conductors behave the same in the Hodson apparatus
How does temperature affect the resistance of semi-conductors?

Levitating magnets Demonstrating magnetic levitation using a 3-2-1 superconductor.

Cost

- $33 inc. GST per demonstration.

- To keep costs down, this demonstration is only available when booked with the
Liquid Nitrogen Show. Otherwise, our standard $165 inc. GST visit charge must apply.

- Country schools please contact our office for availability.
Specific Outcomes:

Electrical Energy in the Home

8.3.5: Electric currents also produce magnetic fields and these fields are used in different devices in the home

Motors & Generators

9.3.2: The relative motion between a conductor and magnetic field is used to generate an electric voltage.

From Ideas to Implementation

9.4.4: Investigations into the electrical properties of particular metals at different temperatures led to the identification of superconductivity and the exploration of possible applications

Investigate the Meisner effect, levitating magnets over superconductors.

Investigate where the right hand grip rule applies in the determining the direction of current and field lines.

Lenz's Law demonstration using the Hodson apparatus, including a temperature vs resistance demonstration; supercooling different semi-conductor rings in liquid nitrogen.
