Bridge Building 101

A practical workshop where students get to design and build their own bridges using hot glue guns and ice cream sticks.

Specific content covers the differences between truss arrangements and how they influence bridge strength.

What forces act within a bridge and how do engineers compensate for them within modern designs? Find out when you put your design to the test!

Specific Outcomes

Built Environment

BE S3.1:

- evaluates proposed designs for a bridge by modelling structures using timber strips and cardboard gussets and testing them to the point of destruction

Learning processes: DM S3.8. INV S3.7

Requirements

- Appropriate for Years 5 to 6 with a maximum of 30 students per class


- 16 Tables arranged in groups of 4 near a power point. Chairs are required.


- Access to at least 2 electrical power sockets (preference for 3 or 4)


- Duration 90 minutes, set up time 45 minutes and pack up time 45 minutes

Cost

- $195 inc. GST per 90 minute workshop.
