Fizzics in a Box Series: The Electricity & Magnetism Box

The 'Fizzics in a Box' loan programme is designed for QLD, NSW, VIC and ACT primary schools as a series of hands-on physics kits for use within the classroom. Each box contains engaging hands-on equipment, teacher notes and movie snippets directly relevant to school curriculum.

An option exists for your school to book a video conference with one of our educators for an additional series of experiments live with your class.

Hands on activities

Compasses x 6 Use in a variety of experiments
Conductivity Experiment x 1 Which materials conduct electricity?
Electrical maze x 1 Students move their wand through the maze without closing the circuit
Electromagnetic playground x1 Construct a playground that switches on and off to move the swing
Electromagnetic shake torches x 2 Shake a magnet through a copper coil to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy into light energy.
Electrostatic balloons Charge up balloons and stick them everywhere!
Floating magnetic pen
x 1
Levitate a magnetic pen in mid-air! Useful as a discussion on trains that use magnetic levitation.
Fortune teller fish pickup Charge up electrostatic rods to pick up these pieces of cellophane
Hand generator x1 Convert kinetic energy into electrical energy with this hand driven dynamo.
Magnetic sticks and balls Align the magnets to make sculptures.
Magnetic bumper cars
x 1
Align the bumper car magnets within the square, conforming to the rules in each challenge. Highly engaging!
Magnetic twirlers x 3 Roll the magnetic top along the wires.
Media File A series of digital movies on how to use the equipment. Use these in conjunction with a interactive whiteboard as a classroom demonstration.
Mini Plasma Globe x 1 Electric current through a glowing gas. Requires a USB port to power
Potato battery x 1 Determine which pair of electrodes creates the greatest voltage within a potato.
Soda can attractor Use static electricity to move a soda can.
Solar power experiments Use a solar panel to convert light energy into electrical energy in a series of experiments.
Water bending Use everyday materials to investigate the polarity of water.
Weird TV x 1 Bend black and white TV images using a magnet - don't try this with any other TV except this one!
Wind power x 1 Investigate wind power as an alternative energy.

Requirements

The school will need to provide:
- A computer with USB port, a running tap, a potato and a soda can.
