A hands on workshop relevant to modern living, where students investigate electrical energy production from renewable and non-renewable resources.

The activities cover a range of topics including wind farms, hydrogen fuel cells, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, how to reduce energy consumption in the home and the difference between ozone depletion and the enhanced greenhouse effect.

Students will develop a better understanding of the different sources of energy and gain insight into current research being undertaken into energy production.

Renewable Energy

Hands on Activities

Hand generators  Create a buzz with different dynamos
Hydrogen fuel cells  Split water, join water, split water, join water
Hydropower Harness the kinetic energy of moving water.
Lights & lux meters  Which light wastes more electrical energy?
Measure that motor! How much greenhouse gas is produced by cars?
Ozone depletion  Make a phosphorescent screen glow with UV light
Radiometer Energy in the palm of your hand. How does it work?
Shower time Are all shower roses the same?
Solar racing  Can you guess which car will win the race?
Solar radio Convert light energy to listen to your favourite tunes.
The greenhouse effect  Do we really need it?  Is it getting hot in here?
Wind turbine Windy days can blow you away!

Requirements

- Appropriate for Years 3 to 6 with a maximum of 30 students per class

- Access to 3 electrical power sockets and 12 tables. Chairs are not required.

Specific Outcomes: Science and Technology

Physical Phenomena:

PP S2.4: - identifies various forms and sources of energy and devises systems that use energy.

PP S3.4 - determines, records and reports on the conditions necessary for an electrical circuit
- researchers and chooses alternative sources of energy to power an energy efficient device.

Products and Services

PS S3.5: - creates and evaluates products and services demonstrating consideration of sustainability...

Learning processes: INV ES2.7, INV S3.7

Specific Outcomes: Human Society and its Environment

Patterns of Place and Location

ENS3.5: Demonstrates an understanding of the interconnectedness between Australia and global environments and how individuals and groups can act in an ecologically responsible manner

Relationships with Places

ENS2.6: examines the advantages and disadvantages of different land uses.

ENS3.6: compares the relative costs and benefits of different technologies used to modify and create environments.

Fits within COGS Unit 'Living Land'.
