Australian Fur Seal
Scientific Name

Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus

Status

Low risk. Southern Australian waters around TAS and VIC, extending to south coast of NSW in Jervis Bay.

Habitat

Coast, continental slope and shelf waters, up to 180 km offshore. Comes ashore on rocky islands and platforms.

Eats pelagic and mid-water fish and cephalopods.
Can dive to at least 200m.
Description

Adult males entirely grey-brown with darker, thickened neck, chest and shoulders with a mane of coarse hair. Adult females silvery grey above, yellowish throat and chest with a brown belly.
