Make a straw flute

You will need:

- A plastic straw and some scissors

Instructions

1. Cut the end of the straw into a point as per the picture shown above.
2. Insert the pointed end of the straw into your mouth and blow.

3. If the pointed end is in the correct spot in your mouth you will get the ends to vibrate.

4. Carefully cut the straw as you blow through the straw. The sound will get higher.

Blowing through the straw forces the ends of the cut straw to vibrate rapidly, creating a standing wave which can be heard easily. If you cut the straw the standing wave is shortened... making the the pitch higher as you have more oscillations in a given length of air. Try using two straws, whereby you can slide one over the other as you blow which creates mini-trombone effect!

Be careful demonstrating this to younger children; advise them of the dangers of scissors near your eyes, nose and mouth.
