Asparagus Fern
Scientific Name

Protasparagus aethiopicus
Family: Liliaceae

Flowers

White flowers up to 4mm long in numerous axillary racemes.

Habitat

Originating from South Africa, it's introduction into Australia as an ornamental pot plant has produced serious problems in coastal Australian bushland.
Forms a dense 'mat' of roots through the top layer of soil, prohibiting other plants to regenerate. Colonies of these plants can be found throughout the understory of affected coastal bushland in Sydney.

Main stem is prickly below each branch.
Fruits are red berries, carried by birds.

Eradication

Control can include registered herbicides such as Roundup used as a diluted foliar spray.
Follow all directions on the label.

Mechanical removal works well, removing the almost suffocating root system from the topsoil. Requires several treatments to be effective.
