Science journal articles are filled with amazing discoveries… but sometimes can be filled with jargon.

In this session, we challenge students to communicate the science from real science articles through a designed model from random materials.

• Design a model of the concepts using simple materials
• Give a 90-second talk to your class on what the article is about!

Your students will get first-hand experience on what engineers are looking to solve as they address NASA Shortfall 0301-03: Energy Storage for Extreme Temperatures, identified through the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) at NASA.

On the lunar surface, batteries must survive the cold of the lunar night (dropping to -240°C) while also managing the heat generated by their own operations and the blistering lunar day (up to 120°C).

In this challenge, you will address battery insulation for the lunar night in a STEM challenge that simulates the real thing.

• Can your battery survive immersion in liquid nitrogen (-196°C) for up to 2 minutes?
• Can you use everyday materials to do this?
• Can you make your solution as light as possible in the process?

Time is also spent discussing the Artemis missions and its subesequent benefits for life here on Earth.
This same issue is being addressed by ELO2 and the Australian Space Agency as we look to land Roo-ver on the lunar surface during the Artemis missions.

Saber Astronautics is an Australian space company based in Adelaide that runs a mission operations centre that tracks space missions plus designs them on behalf of government and corporate entities. T.A.R.O.T. is an acronym for Terrestrial and Astronomical Rapid Observation Toolkit.

This is a handy tool for anyone who wants to understand where our satellites really are, what they are carrying,  and you can track them live as they pass overhead in real time. There are no accounts needed, no costs and access to the data is free.

Satellite tracking and visualisation made easy

Using the T.A.R.O.T tool is easy, just control with a mouse to zoom out or in or click and hold the mouse button as you move the mouse to change the perspective.

If you click on any of the dots, you will get far more information about that satellite. If you know the NORAD ID, you can type that in to find the satellite you are looking for.

Things to check out about the satellites:

• their velocity
• their altitude
• who owns the satellite
• the period of orbit & more

As you look at the movements of the satellites, you’d find that they mainly fall into three orbit categories:

Space debris visualisation

What is very handy is also showing where space debris is being tracked. Just scroll on the left-hand menu and check the box for space debris and you can get a clear idea that there is a lot of space debris in LEO (Low Earth Orbit). This is very handy as we consider the effect of adding to space debris issues it creates for potential impacts.

Space debris is such as rocket bodies are specifically tracked as well (for example, see the ARIANE 5  rocket prbit trajectory below).

You can also quickly find out where the International Space Station is too.

In this anatomy workshop, we;

• Explain the interrelationship among cells, tissues and organs
• Identify the role of the digestive, circulatory, respiratory and excretory systems of humans, and name the major organs
• Annotate representations of models of organ systems to describe their processes and functions
• Describe how the structures of organ systems, and the specialised cells within these systems, enable them to carry out their functions
• Describe how the components of each body system interact to allow the efficient functioning of an organism
