Discover great ways of teaching science!

Primary Teacher PD made fun

You don't have to 'squeeze science in', make science part of every lesson, even art and craft! This hands on workshop is designed for teachers interested in integrating creative science experiments into the Australian science curriculum. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating cost effective experiments that have been shown to have a real impact on children's understanding of basic scientific processes.

Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) is a major focus for Local, State & Federal governments looking to produce a more scientifically literate & productive society. Education institutions form a major component of this renewed push and as such need to be able to adapt and run quality science lessons that are relevant to the learner.
  • Suitable for all K to 6 Teachers and available Australia-wide.
  • This session can also be adapted for Preschool and Childcare teachers too!

What happens during the hour?

Simple experiments based on light, sound, energy, movement and more are shown. We want you and your teachers to be comfortable with getting simple ingredients from local supermarkets and turning them into engaging and worthwhile classroom experiments. This is not a PowerPoint presentation; it's a whole bunch of experiments that your staff actively participate in and have been classroom tested and shown to be highly effective in increasing student understanding. All materials presented have direct syllabus links to both the ACARA and NSW K to 10 Science Syllabus.

Participation is actively encouraged and teachers will also become aware of the growing list of further lesson plan ideas through our >100 free science experiments and our active education blog series.

We find that schools find this easy to schedule this event as part of a staff meeting. This can also be run via video conference whereby we will ask you to bring some simple ingredients along to participate in the science experiments.

2.1.2 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.

Participants will gain an understanding of the use of the scientific method to make observations and gather results through participation in simple but meaningful science experiments using simple, low-cost materials. Through active input into the scientific process, the participants of this course will see how low-cost materials can be integrated into their existing teaching programs to enhance the learning experiences provided to their students.

3.2.2 Plan and implement well-structured learning and teaching programs or lesson sequences that engage students and promote learning.

Teachers completing this course will participate in hands-on experiments using simple materials so that they can gain an understanding of how the experiment would be undertaken in their own classroom. Teachers will gain first-hand experience the key aspects of the scientific method being explored as well as the safety hazards of the activities, so that they can effectively plan engaging lessons and successfully implement them to enhance their existing teaching programs.

  • Appropriate for up to 30 teachers or more!
  • 2 tables arranged around the edge of the room. If teachers are to run experiments themselves they will need their own desks.
  • We will provide all necessary materials when we're visiting a school.
  • This STEM PD session can also be run via video conference, however you will need to provide your own materials (these are of low cost and easily accessible however).
  • Access to running water.
  • Access to a whiteboard and electrical power.
  • Duration 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your time frame.
  • Set up time 45 minutes and pack up time 45 minutes.

$390 inc. GST for a 60 minute workshop.
This workshop is free for schools that book 2 or more of our school science workshops.
We can also arrange this via video conference if time does not allow us to present this on the day of your school visit.
