Great tasting sherbet

You will need:

  • Icing sugar
  • Citric acid (supermarket herb and spice aisle)
  • Bicarbonate soda
  • Cup and spoon

1. Add 8 parts icing sugar, 1 part citric acid & 1 part bicarbonate soda

2. Stir. It's that's simple!


- Tastes like soap = add more sugar and citric acid

- Tastes too sour = add more sugar and tiny bit of bicarbonate soda

Notice that the sherbet only bubbles on your tongue and not in the cup?

The fizzing on your tongue is caused by the water in your saliva allowing the citric acid and bicarbonate soda to dissolve. Scientists call this 'in solution'. As the citric acid and the bicarbonate soda are now in solution they can react much more easily as the molecules can contact each other much better.

What's the gas? Carbon dioxide (water is produced in this reaction as well)
